Waiting area at Torrejón University Hospital - a place that promotes well-being

In 2024, a dedicated waiting area was created at the University Hospital in Torrejón de Ardoz, near Madrid. Spanning an area of 200 square metres, an oncological waiting area was created within an existing building, which not only offers patients and their companions space to wait, but also to work, relax and retreat.

The project was initiated and funded by the Nous Cims Foundation, which is committed to the well-being of people undergoing oncological treatment with the Domum programme. Sedus was chosen as the furnishing partner because the products are optimally tailored to the needs of patients and create a lasting impression with their high quality. In addition, both partners share fundamental values, in particular, a commitment to the foundation concept. The architectural design and execution of the space’s renovation were carried out by Zarate Arquitectura.

Balancing different needs

The aim of the project was to create a balanced combination of flexible work areas, cosy waiting zones and areas for retreat and relaxation. The oncological waiting area should be a place to meet the diverse needs of patients and their companions, where they can feel comfortable during treatment – whether working, reading or simply relaxing.

Agile working & collaboration

In the areas for agile working and collaboration, stackable se:lab flip tables are available, which are ideal for multifunctional spaces such as waiting areas. Thanks to the castors, the table can be moved effortlessly. If required, it can also be folded up and stowed away to save space.

Warm colours and natural materials

Particular attention was given to the selection of materials and colours with a calming palette of soft, warm tones and natural wooden surfaces, helping to create a welcoming environment. These are also easy to clean and equipped with antibacterial properties. This has created an environment that meets the highest aesthetic and hygiene standards.  The cooperation between the architects, the Nous Cims Foundation and Sedus ran smoothly and in a spirit of partnership. One of the biggest challenges was to find a balance between cosy, soft furnishings and the strict requirements for hygiene and easy maintenance. This goal was successfully realised together.

Comfort that connects

All furniture and tables have also been equipped with integrated power options, such as standard USB chargers and sockets, which offers users the greatest possible comfort. Patients and carers can use their mobile devices at any time and stay connected.

A project that sets standards

The design of the oncological waiting area at Torrejón University Hospital has created a place that goes far beyond mere function. It combines well-being, flexibility and technical equipment to create a harmonious overall experience. This project impressively demonstrates how thoughtful design and high-quality furnishing solutions from Sedus can help to make even challenging situations a little more pleasant for patients and their relatives - an example that inspires and can serve as a model for future healthcare projects.
