LOOKBOOK N° 03

work. life. style

How can we successfully create spaces where people really flourish? How can we not only balance the diverse demands faced by the workplace, but also bring them into harmonious alignment? And how can we design environments that strengthen community and reconnect people with one another?

In a hybrid society, we need places that take into account people’s diverse needs and bring them closer together again through a vibrant, inspiring work environment. In the third edition of the trend magazine LOOKBOOK, we set out to find some answers. We spoke with experts about the transformation of the workplace and how it influences the design of contemporary work settings. Our focus extends beyond European projects to include concepts from the USA, Canada, Mexico, and China – so you can look forward to internationally relevant perspectives and many new facets of workplace design.

We hope you enjoy reading and discovering!

Naturally Connected

At first glance, it is impossible to guess how sustainable and innovative se:hive actually is. The strength of this acoustic solution clearly lies in its simplicity and modularity. The piece of furniture responds to fluid working styles: sometimes loud and collaborative, sometimes quiet and introspective. At the same time, the word “hive” constantly reminds users of the idea behind the design: the structure of a honeycomb. The design is inspired by nature. However, it only becomes clear that the acoustic solution connects people naturally in many ways when you take a closer look at the history of the product. In a pictorial journey, we go on a search for clues – from the design process to the selection of materials and manufacturing.

Hybrid Hospitality

Nowadays, many hotels describe themselves as hybrid concepts, offering multifunctional rooms and various sources of income such as restaurants, conference rooms or bars. However, hybrid hospitality is about something much more essential: it is about designing places where people feel a sense of belonging, interact with one another and thereby form a genuine community, regardless of how much they paid for their room. And it is about accommodation that enables a holistic guest experience – no matter if the visitor stays for a day, a week or a whole month. Alongside the presentation of two exciting concepts that elevate hybrid hospitality to a new level, an interview with internationally renowned design studio MAWD | March and White Design offers deeper insights into the trend’s impact on workplace design.

Point of View

An office is an office is an office. No, that is not true. Of course, a workplace must meet certain essential criteria in accordance with employee protection regulations. However, these requirements are far from sufficient for an office to be perceived as attractive, modern or inclusive. Depending on your point of view, other characteristics are crucial in ensuring that everyone in the office can develop freely. In Point of View, leading expert Kay Sargent discusses how to design neuro-inclusive workspaces that prioritise flexibility, belonging, and inclusion. In addition, we present six international coworking spaces that offer their communities a genuine perspective.

Materiality

Materiality is much more than just feel and appearance – it tells stories of origin, responsibility and innovation. The journey from natural raw material to finished product shows how research, craftsmanship and design work together to create solutions that are tangible and well thought-out. This results in approaches that conserve resources, open up new possibilities and have a lasting impact on our understanding of design. In the chapter Materiality, Prof. Dr. Sascha Peters explains the effect of sustainable materials on the aesthetics, feel and functionality of furniture, as well as their contribution to the ecological balance of modern offices. And we embark on a journey of discovery and learn how the new acoustic solution se:hive naturally connects people.
